Exercises to help with back pain and mobility

12 Jul 2026

Try this 8-minute video if you have lower back issues or mobility issues when walking.

One of the main reasons for difficulty when walking in Parkinson’s is that the glute muscle in your bum switch off. There can be a few reasons for this, but a common one is as your gait (your style of walking, how you move your feet) changes, your body will begin to cheat as it moves.

When walking, you use the glutes to stabilise your body, thighs to raise the knee and calves to raise the feet. Parkinson’s may alter this by making you lean forward, sway as you walk or drag your feet. When this happens, you begin to create bad habits and the muscles then weaken as they are not doing their job properly. These exercises will help prevent this, but more importantly, make you aware of the unwanted changes helping to prevent them.
