A man living with Parkinson’s disease is staying active thanks to a fitness group in Luton. John Jones is 93 years old, but won’t let his age slow him down.

Each week he joins others who have the condition at a special class designed to ease symptoms and help people get their confidence back.

For three months, a joint Parkinson’s UK and MolyFit class has been held weekly at the Bushmead Community Hub.

The group was set up to help people slow down the progression of Parkinson’s by using exercise as a form of medicine.

Led by John Molyneux from MolyFit, the group’s attendees lift weights as part of the class.

This week, the class were tasked with lifting Olympic-style weights off the floor in one movement.

John Jones, despite living with the condition and having arthritic knees, completed 40kg lift in seconds.

He said: “To be honest, in the beginning I wasn’t sure it was for me, but everyone’s enthusiasm was catching and John Molyneux’s coaching is gently persuasive.

“And although I won’t be weightlifter of the year, my decrepit joints are responding, all be it slowly. But every little helps.”

The group runs every Wednesday afternoon and is the first of its kind in the town.

John Molyneux added: “I knew they could all do it, the trick is getting them to believe that they could.”
